BTI Biotechnology Institute opens its doors to media

Yesterday, September 14, BTI Biotechnology threw its doors open to the media in order to explain the various areas of biomedicine in which it works, as well as to show off its facilities which, in the area of regenerative medicine and oral implantology, are among the most cutting-edge in Spain.

The event aroused considerable interest, and BTI was happy to welcome representatives from a dozen media organizations, including El País, EFE, Diario Médico, and Radio Nacional.

Juan Carlos Flores, Director of Strategy and Development at BTI, was tasked with introducing the company, its origins, its development, and how it has become one of Europe’s most respected companies in the oral implantology sector, as well as a world leader in the science of tissue regeneration through the use of autologous plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF®-Endoret®).

Afterwards, the journalists were invited to inspect BTI’s facilities at first hand, boasting technologically ground-breaking equipment. The journalists were specially interested in seeing not only the facilities in the R&D area, but also the operating rooms, the most modern and best-equipped in Spain, which Dr. Eduardo Anitua himself took time to show and explain to the visitors.

Next it was the turn of Gorka Orive, Head of the Regenerative Medicine Laboratory at BTI, who proceeded to give the assembled media a brief introduction to the topic of plasma rich in growth factors, early research efforts, the company’s investment in R&D&I, the many laboratory and clinical studies, as well as the different therapeutic applications for PRGF®-Endoret®, among others.

Finally, Dr. Anitua drew attention to the latest advances and the vast present and future therapeutic possibilities that have been opened up thanks to this innovative technique, after which he fielded questions from the members of the media.

Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF.Endoret) used to treat King Juan Carlos I

Early this morning the King underwent an operation to relieve a painful Achilles tendon in his left leg. It was a minor operation requiring neither general anesthesia nor hospitalization. During the operation, the traumatologist Ángel Villamor used Plasma Rich in Growth Factor (PRGF®-Endoret®), a technology developed and patented by BTI Biotechnology Institute, to promote the regeneration and repair of the damaged tissues, as well as to hasten the recovery of the King’s heel.

By applying PRGF®-Endoret® it is possible to simulate and accelerate (by up to 40%) the physiological mechanisms of repair triggered spontaneously in all damaged tissues, whether as a result of injury, surgical treatment, or disease. With this method, the destroyed or damaged tissue is replaced by a natural process with fresh tissue, but in much less time than is the case with conventional treatments. All this from small concentrations of blood plasma obtained by centrifuging the patient’s own blood. As this treatment involves using the patient’s own plasma, there is never any question of an allergic reaction or of rejection of the treatment.

PRGF®-Endoret®, a technology that is 100% Spanish.

PRGF®-Endoret® technology first emerged in the late 1990s from the hand of the Basque medical stomatologist, Eduardo Anitua. Since then, Dr. Anitua has been working tirelessly to find possible therapeutic applications for growth factors for improving and speeding up the processes of healing in his patients in the aftermath of surgery.

After setting up his own research centre in Vitoria, BTI Biotechnology Institute, Dr. Anitua began using PRGF®-Endoret® in oral surgery as a means of regenerating the bone tissue around dental implants and so cut down on their consolidation time. But within a short time, and given the versatility of this technology, its application has spread to different areas of medicine such as ophthalmology, dermatology, cosmetic surgery, sports medicine, and traumatology.

The solution chosen by many sports personalities and celebrities is now within everyone’s reach.
Thanks to its excellent therapeutic results, backed up by countless clinical trials and scientific publications in internationally renowned journals, a large number of public personalities, celebrities, and ordinary citizens have benefited from PRGF®-Endoret®. Take the case of tennis ace Rafa Nadal or Barcelona football star Xavi Hernández – both have used this treatment on a number of occasions to speed their recovery from an and enable them to get back to competing as quickly as possible.

However, this therapeutic technique is not just a treatment for the rich and famous – its cost is not high and its benefits are well known. By now, several thousands of patients have been treated successfully with PRGF®-Endoret®.

The World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) has withdrawn from the 2011 list of prohibited substances and methods the intramuscular treatment which includes PRGF

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has withdrawn from the 2011 list of prohibited substances and methods the intramuscular treatment known as PRP, which includes PRGF, the treatment with autologous growth factors (from the patient himself), developed by the Spanish doctors Eduardo Anitua and Mikel Sánchez.

This procedure, which greatly accelerates tissue regeneration times to allow an earlier return to sports, had been included by WADA in the 2010 list of prohibited substances and methods for use in muscular injuries, although it was allowed both for tendon and ligament injuries. Thanks to the mediation of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), the innovative treatment of the Spanish doctors Eduardo Anitua and Mikel Sánchez has been allowed again by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Over the period of one year, the Spanish doctors have been providing scientific evidence to demonstrate that their innovative injury treatment does not result in any doping. The evidence, in form of extensive documentation that was first submitted to the Spanish Anti-Doping Agency, then to the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee and finally to the World Anti-Doping Agency, convinced the members of the WADA that the pioneering treatment of the two Spanish doctors is not performance enhancing.
